Ostara

Here is the Ostara ritual I presented at CotE’s Sabbat celebration.

I. Quarter Calls

From the frozen mountain top billowing down to a gentle rustle through the early buds and new blooms. The pockets that carry birds through flight and the strong gusts that move storms. Primal communication connecting life. Join us as we welcome Spring. Hail and welcome spirits of Air.

From the belly of the earth, molten rock bubbling upward clearing a path with complete destruction to begin with a clean start and allowing for fresh life. Light and heat for creation and destruction. Light and heat both tame and wild. Primal intuition guiding life. Join us as we welcome Spring. Hail and welcome spirits of Fire.

From the depths of the ocean churning and crashing ashore flowing through rivers and streams. The rains that fall through fields running into lakes and splashing over rocky currents. Primal wisdom leading life. Hail and welcome spirits of Water.

From the tiniest pebble to the tallest tree. Mountains and valleys, deserts and wetlands, forests and plains. Where plants root and animals borough. Primal nurturer supporting life. Hail and welcome Spirits of Earth.

II. Deity invitation

Eostre, bringer of dawn, harbinger of Spring. We invite you to join us this morning to melt away the lasts holds of winter and step fully into spring. If it is your will, Hail and welcome.

III. Introduction

The Wheel has once again turned, and with it the earth moves further from darkness and into light. The world is fertile and ready to sprout into life. Spring truly begins with a heralding of flowering trees and plants, and the arrival of babies, both animal and human. Animals that were hibernating are coming back to the forest after a long winter nap.

This all happens when Ostara herself comes and awakens the plants and animals and, as a fertility goddess, brings new life to all each spring.

One year, Ostara was feeling just a little bit guilty for arriving late, and was appalled at the first thing she encountered: a little bird who lay dying on the forest floor, his wings frozen by the snow. She removed his feathers to separate him from the ice. Now unable to fly, she transformed him into a snow hare and gave him the ability to run swiftly so he could evade all hunters. Honoring his earlier life as a bird, she also gave him the ability to lay eggs in all the colors of the rainbow. Impressed with her creation, Ostara took him as a consort.

Eventually, her special egg-laying hare consort did as rabbits do and reproduced at a rapid rate with whomever he could. Feeling betrayed by his affairs, Ostara threw him into the skies in a fit of anger, where he unfortunately landed under the feet of the feet of the great hunter and woodsman Orion. He remains there to this day, and is known to us the constellation Lepus (The Hare).

IV. Meditation

Winter is receding. The risk of frost is nearly gone. The crone of winter is again shifting her face to become the youthful maiden once more.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

The energy at this time of year is one of newness and purity. It is a time for blessings, youth, preparation, growth, and development.

This is a great time to bless our new growings, literal and otherwise. This is a great time to honor and encourage the inner child in all of us.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

As the sun rises tomorrow morning, the dawn of spring peers out to what lies ahead. Soon to follow are flowers, crops, the fullness of the trees, and warm winds. This awakening is still young and may not be seen, but surely can be felt.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

Inhale and feel the essence of the spring. Feel the potential of the new growth. Feel the revitalization of the earth.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

Inhale and feel the trees around us. Feel the roots stretching down, drawing deep into the earth to get nutrients and water. Feel the trunks standing tall, holding the weight of their wholeness. Feel their limbs reaching out to the world around them, reaching upward ready to bear fruit.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

Inhale and feel your inner growth. Feel your roots stretching down, holding strong to the earth with a gravitational pull. Feel your trunk, protecting your vital organs and holding you upright and tall. Feel your limbs reaching outward, ready to become fruitful.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

Inhale and breathe in awareness of everything within you. Feel the fullness of the spring feeding into your hunger, your joy, your exhaustion. Deep in the corners of your whole self, reach down to the part of you that has been pushed down, yearning to awaken, blossom, and come to light.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

Inhale and breathe in all of the potential within you. Feel the awakening of your creativity. Allow your desires to flow. Allow the fertile season to manifest in your intentions. Allow your roots to take hold and reach yourself up and bear your fruit. Allow all of yourself to flow through you.

We are all standing on the cusp of something new.

What is it you want to create?

When you are ready, open your eyes and come back to us.

Once a year, at this time of new beginnings, Ostara calls Lepus to return to her on Earth once again. In celebration of this reunion, he harkens to his inner bird and lays his colored eggs.

V. Closing of Circle

Thank you Air for blessing our rite. Return from whence you came. Hail and farewell.

Thank you Fire for blessing our rite. Return from whence you came. Hail and farewell.

Thank you Water for blessing our rite. Return from whence you came. Hail and farewell.

Thank you Earth for blessing our rite. Return from whence you came. Hail and farewell.

Lady of the new sun, lady of new life, if it was your will, thank you for joining us this morning and blessing our rite. If it was your will, hail and farewell.

Merry meet, merry part, and merry meet again.
