Walpurgisnacht

Published April 23, 2017 by Lunapo

Well…I’m going to go ahead and guess a whole bunch of folks. But not me, until just today.

May Day is Walpurgisnacht. The rituals happened at the same time, with different sets of rural farming peoples, who saw the world differently. Celts celebrated in the day and through the night. Northmen celebrated in the night and through the day. The point of the festivities was the same: Yay! Warmth! Sunlight! Our food is going to grow!

Depending on which text you read and from which area the text is derived, Walpurgisnacht is either driving away Witches (or celebrating Witches, as is the modern case) or purely the welcoming of the warm weather with Summer Finding or, another multi-night festival dedicated to Odin.

It is said Odin hung himself from Yggdrasil for nine nights to gain the knowledge of language and the Runes. Walpurgisnacht is then celebrated from April 22 (aka Earth Day) to April 30th. The Celts began their celebration on May 1st with Beltane.

This year, the family is going camping for Hubby’s tiny truck driving competition. We are going to be right smack in the middle of the woods on Walpurgisnacht. How beautifully fascinating is that?

We have sicks with ribbons and bells left over from a friend’s wedding which we will bring with us to celebrate the holiday as we pick a tree to dance around. Perhaps we’ll just dance around the whole camp ground.

Either way, I’m excited to continue to learn more about the Nordic Wheel and develop my craft in line with the gods who have chosen me.

Perhaps next year we will do all nine nights for the gift of the Runes.

Ancient Nordic time wheel: " the Wheel of the Year consists of four or eight festivals: The solstices and equinoxes, known as the "quarter days", and the four midpoints between, known as the "cross quarter days".

There are many variations, which will lead to lots of studying.

Poor me! I have to get my student on! (If I could make a living being a student, I would do so in a heartbeat!!)

Bedtime yeah buts

Published April 22, 2017 by Lunapo

The bedtime “yeah but”s is a now a new phenomenon in my house. It’s been a semi-regular occurrence since Witchlette was 2 1/2.

Last night I felt that I finally had an answer to all of the “yeah but”s which also stopped them.

Last night, after reading her book, blowing out her candle, and telling her another Asgard story…

Mama, please…I need company.

[Witchlette], there are two things Mama needs to keep being a good, sweet, patient Mama. Do you remember what they are?

Food and I don’t know.

Sleep. Food and sleep. Mama is very tired and I need to go to sleep myself so that I can rest and be a good patient sweet Mama tomorrow. And you need to go to sleep because you have a big day with A’s birthday party.

Ok Mama. But I can’t find Horton.

/Pulls Horton lovey off elbow and drops onto face/ You don’t mean the one you were snuggling with already?

Oh. Mama.

Food and sleep [Witchlette]. It’s very late (for you). I love you, good night.

Eath Day musings

Published April 22, 2017 by Lunapo

The web of life. All things are interconnected. All life is one.

Scientific theory and spiritual ideals say the same. The Earth is alive. Call her Gaia, Jörd, Danu, Terra, Mother Nature, or any other name…She is alive.

Whether you see her as this

Or this

Or this

One thing is clear. We are killing her.

And in doing so, we are killing ourselves.

Every person on ever country needs to live as if it matters. We all collectively need to do our part, if not for the good of all of the interconnected life, then selfishly for themselves.

Humanity is literally burning her away until there’s nothing left. And when that comes, there will be nothing left.

We have the power in our hands to fix it.

Best neighbors

Published April 21, 2017 by Lunapo

The best neighbors are the ones who frequently go overlooked. They can’t speak, at least not in a way that we can understand. But they are quite helpful.

They pay rent in kills, in a way which they need to maintain sustenance anyway, so it’s not a burden to them.

If these neighbors and their many relatives (frogs, snakes, etc) were to vanish tomorrow, we’d all be the worse for it.

Save all the yucky bug eaters.

Manifest gods

Published April 20, 2017 by Lunapo

Friday night I was having dessert at a local pub with some of my CotE people when we started discussing manifest gods.

Makes me think of the Joan Osborne song

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin’ to make his way home?

So, the gods of old are manifested into folks living now. Their spirits are immortal, but their bodies are not. They reincarnate into new bodies and take on new personas, but continue to manifest their godly selves within that persona.

Sounds quite a bit like…

Left right: Anders/Braggi, Mike/Ullr, Axl/Odin, Ty/Hodr, Olaf/Balder

Norse gods continue to reincarnate through decendants of Norse gods manifested who fled from the  I North to Norsewood, New Zealand. It sounds a bit silly and at times it is.  Seriously though, go watch the heck out of this show. It’s not American, so nudity and swearing is high while violence is low.

So, manifest gods. There was talk of Odin being a school bus driver, Thor being a fighter pilot, and Loki being Tom Cruise. I believe Odin to be more suited as a truck driver, as there is much more traveling for The Wanderer. And Thor is much more blue collar. Tom Cruise I understand for Loki- he’s entertaining, but crazy as hell and totally unpredictable and uncontrollable.

The next day, while on our 10 mile hike, Hubby and I discussed this. Hubby declared Odin would have to be a travel writer and I agree with his conjecture 2000%. Odin is the master of language. He would need to share his travels. He also believes Thor would have career status in the military and be eligible for retirement years ago, but continue to volunteer for front line infantry.

Thinking of Witchlette’s favorites, Balder and Hod…I wonder if they would be working together. Balder the gentle, kind god. He would be one of the rare make preschool teachers.

This got me thinking too about the goddesses. Would Frigg be more focused on wives or mothers? Would she be a general women’s advocate and cover both? Or would she be a seamstress for fashion designer? Perhaps she’s Vera Wang, known most for her wedding gown designs. What about Sif? She is to wives what Frigg is to mothers: embodiment of both, but known for one more than the other. She’s an agricultural goddess, so perhaps she’s be a farmer. Maybe a hair dresser, as she’s known more for her golden locks than anything else. All the handmaidens of which we know far too little about…

My personal goal for the remainder of 2017 is to get to know as much as I can about these mysterious figures. So much has been lost to the sands of time. I have been pointed to some resources that may help shed some light onto them. More to come!

Replacement behavior

Published April 19, 2017 by Lunapo

So I’m a nail biter. It’s a gross ugly habit and I hate doing it. I started when I was about Witchlette’s age: I saw my dad do it and figured I’d join in on the “fun”. 27 years later, try as I might to stop, here I am still. It’s a subconscious habit too. I’ll be doing something which takes mental power- reading, writing, driving- and find myself with my finger headed to my mouth. And then I hate that. I’ve tried to stop. My family has tried to help me stop. Nothing has worked.

Because the point was always stop.

For the last few days, Hubby and I have been musing about getting Witchling one of those fight cubes. When he stands at the did player and pushes the buttons, give him a replacement button to push instead. We’ll likely just use old video game buttons because we have them and it does the same task.

This got me thinking about myself.

Could a cube help me to not bite. Perhaps I could play with the cube instead.

When we want students to stop doing a behavior, we don’t stop them cold. We replace it with something else, something similar in function but significantly less disruptive. I’ve been stopping cold.

A cube could work. But, do I really want to buy something plastic to which I don’t have any connections? One of the cube sides is a worry stone pad.

Why not a worry stone. I can bless it and make it Magick and have a connection to it. It would be something real and natural. I decided to bless it with Pertho, Frigg’s Rune, to have her help me on this journey.

This morning I cast my morning Circle and invited Frigg, painted her Rune, and blessed the stone.

When I go to bite or pick

When I need to do it quick

Instead I’ll rub this blessed stone

And leave my fingernails alone

It’s said it takes 66 days to form a habit.

Today is day 1.

Continued growth

Published April 18, 2017 by Lunapo

This Yule, Witchlette and I dedicated ourselves to improving our green thumbs.

We planted basil and lavender during the winter holiday.

Our six small pots of basil are doing quite well.

We’re still waiting for the lavender…

In February, we planted five bulbs. All of them were in pots and they all sprouted. We transplanted them to the front garden as we cleaned it up and gave it fresh mulch. Three of them have been thriving since transplanting. Two have yet to peak through.

Two weeks ago, while making dinner, I found a potato that had more growth than not, so we planted it!

Witchlette found watermelon and sunflower grow kits in her Easter basket which we will begin this weekend.

Here’s hoping the green on our thumbs sticks…It’s been great bonding working in the dirt with her! And Witchling is excited to join us!
